An enchanting mix of Spain and its own Mallorquin character, Majorca remains as popular as ever, whether for a week, a fortnight or a longer stay. The largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca boasts some of the best scenery in the Mediterranean, tranquil countryside, dramatic mountains, many lovely beaches and pretty, secluded coves. There is a good network of roads making it easy to explore the picturesque villages, weekly markets, cultural and artisan centres and prehistoric caves. Palma, the capital, has a beautiful Gothic cathedral, harbour and impressive marina, and shoppers will delight in the sophisticated pedestrianised shopping area. Majorca is famous for its artificial pearls and they can be found in shops all over the island. Leather is another popular purchase and inexpensive items of Mallorquin pottery make excellent souvenirs.
