The smallest province of Yugoslavia, now forms the costal corner of the Republic of Montenegro. While only 182 miles long, the Montenegrin coast packs in some of the finest coastline the Adriatic has to offer. From the Albanian border, endless sandy beaches, interspersed by small coves with bobbing fishing boats, lead all the way up to the dramatic finale of the Kotor fjord by the Croatian border. For those looking for history and architecture Stari Bar, Budva, Kotor (Unesco World Heritage Site) and Herceg Novi are all perfect for exploring. The highest region the Durmitor National Park is a favourite for summer hiking, where ice has carved out a dramatic mountain landscape, tufted with pine forests. Some 18 lakes dot the Durmitor Range with the largest being Skadar Lake. Tara Canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world after Grand Canyon. Rafting down the Tara River is also among the most popular tourist activities in Montenegro. Biogradska gora is the last rainforest in Europe and is rich in flora and fauna. A selection of traditional recipes of the central and coastal parts will include dried mutton, smoked and fresh carp (from Skadar Lake) a variety of fresh sea fish and, smoked cheese. For a traditional dessert donuts are served with honey and dried figs. Montenegro vineyards produce very good quality wine and is part of the tradition of southern and costal wine makers. The best known wines are the premium whites, Krstac, Cabernet, Chardonnay all produced by the famous company Plantaze. Modern Montenegro is a multi-culture mix of Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Muslim regions, of Serb, Croat and Montenegro traditions.
