This Portuguese sub-tropical island lies off the north west coast of Africa and enjoys a year round mild climate. Visitors will enjoy the relaxed way of life, the courteous people, picturesque fishing villages, colonial mansions, banana and sugar plantations and the many vineyards which produce the famous Madeira wine. A favourite call for cruise liners and known as the Island of Flowers, Madeira is a natural volcanic mountain range and therefore hilly and although there are no natural beaches, however there are two artificial sandy beaches at Calheta and Machico, the scenery and waterfalls are spectacular. The hidden valleys and peaks of the island provide many beautiful walks and the hillsides are easily accessible - here you will find the Levada walks - walking trails alongside an irrigation system of mini-canals which are edged with spectacular flora and fauna. *These should always be guided walks with official mountain guides. Garden enthusiasts will delight in any one of the several botanical gardens and find inspiration at the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens with its many exotic plants, Koi Fish and ceramic tile collection dating from 15th - 20th Century. Visitors to the village of Santana on the north coast will be able to see the traditional triangular shaped homes of the islanders and keep fit enthusiasts can climb to Pico do Areeiro, the highest point on the island. Madeira is renowned for its lace making industry and another equally famous product is the delicious Madeira wine. A trip to Monte offers a chance to try Carros de Cestos, wicker toboggans - if you dare! Golfers will enjoy being technically challenged on either of the two beautiful golf courses whilst enjoying the spectacular views. Neighbouring island Porto Santo is only a 40 mile ferry trip and makes an excellent day trip.
