Lake Garda

It is easy to see why this wonderful area of Italy - with its stunning scenery, superb food and delectable famous wines, lures visitors to return again and again. We are delighted to feature Lake Garda again in our summer 2010 programme and this - the largest and certainly one of the most beautiful - Italian lake, with its stunning stretch of glacial water, lies in a wide valley, a natural sun trap between the Alps and the Dolomites. The long and narrow northern part is bordered on one side by perpendicular cliffs which are draped in spectacular pine forests, and the southern part is wide with low banks, divided by the charming and narrow Sirmione peninsular. This area, with its diverse and beautiful scenery, olive groves and lemon orchards, enjoys a very pleasant climate, similar at times to that of the Mediterranean. Boat and hydrofoil ferries ply the lake from all centres and the Italian towns of Verona and Brescia can be easily reached. The vineyards of Bardolino are well worth a visit for wine lovers and the spectacular Arena Opera in Verona, staged in an open air Roman Amphitheatre, is a must for music lovers (from 18 June).
