Paleokastritsa, Corfu
A favourite with writers and painters through the ages, and one of Corfus most celebrated beauty spots. Sandy bays are ideal for swimming and watersports and the town has a good choice of tavernas.More Information
Paleocastritsa is renowned throughout Greece as the jewel in the crown of the Ionian Islands and indeed the area lives up to its reputation. Although there is no village community in the resort, it is overlooked by the charming mountain village of Lakones. Paleocastritsa runs along one road in and out of the resort, and three large hotels provide a discreet backdrop to the stunning view along the route. The resort has a variety of bars, snack bars and restaurants along the entire resort culminating in the famous main 3 bays of the centre which lie below the 13th century white Byzantine monastery. The resort is quiet and peaceful with crystal clear waters ideal for diving and exploration by boat. Paleocastritsa is steeped in local myth and legend complete with caves and natural rock formations. This area is on the west coast of the island and has stunning swimming conditions. This resort does not have a bustling nightlife, but genuine evenings of food, wine and gentle music whilst enjoying the views from above. The resort is hilly, but safe to walk through and walks available uphill to the mountain village and stunning view above. For the walking enthusiast walks are available to the villages of Lakones and Makrades where there are simple tourist market stalls and the majestic ruins of the recently renovated Angelocastro monument via the village of Krini. A selection of villages for exploration accessible by limited local bus are Doukades and Makrades. These provide an opportunity to observe local Corfiot culture.
