Corfu
This beautiful Ionian Island nestles off the west side of the Greek mainland and is 36 miles long by 15 miles wide. Covered with olive trees which are watered by winter rains, Corfu remains one of the greenest of the Mediterranean islands. The north east coast has lots of sheltered rocky coves and shingle beaches, secluded bays and traditional fishing villages and the more remote west, and southwest in particular, boasts wild, unspoiled beaches and stunning scenery. Inland, a network of twisting roads lead to local villages with warm and friendly Corfiot people. Corfus colourful past is evident throughout the island and British, Roman, Venetian and French occupations all left their mark. Corfu town (or Kerkyra as it is locally known) is an interesting mixture of old and new and the charismatic old city sits in a protected area between the two town fortresses. The French style Liston Square borders the main esplanade (Spianada) and houses some of the finest cafes and restaurants in Corfu - an excellent place to stroll. On the esplanade itself, men compete in weekend cricket matches, the only place in Greece where the sport is played. The French and Venetians inspired the architecture - the English left cricket and Ginger Beer! Corfu has a rich musical history and throughout the summer Corfu is home to many musical events, the islands first brass band was established here in 1840 and music is everywhere. The Ionian University holds musical summer schools and Corfus many philharmonic and brass bands give spectacular performances of classical music and jazz, some in the old fortress.Find Your Perfect Hotel
