The southern Portuguese province of the Algarve is divided from the rest of the country by a series of low-lying mountains, and is one of Europe's most popular all year round holiday destinations. It is home to many excellent, long sandy beaches, and the coastline stretches for 100 miles. Most of the Algarve's trendy, modern holiday resorts were formerly little fishing villages and still feature central areas with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and ancient churches. Take a trip inland and you will discover a myriad of almond trees and groves of lemons, oranges, carobs, pomegranates and figs. Traces of its Moorish history are evident in the region's architecture and golfers will find many excellent green courses. There is always a good choice of waterside restaurants serving barbecued sardines, fresh fish, and 'cataplana' - a local speciality.
