Other improvements

The new departures terminal is, however, just one phase of this massive redevelopment project which has included an extensive range of improvements to the airport's infrastructure:

  • * New navigation and lighting aids have been installed which will allow aircraft to operate in adverse weather conditions - and this puts Bournemouth on a par with the major UK airports.
  • * The 2271 metre long runway has been completely resurfaced - a project that required a team of 100 people and 50 machines working overnight for a period of two months.
  • * The east apron, next to the terminal building, has doubled in size and can now accommodate six aircraft. Parking for a further five aircraft is also available on the west apron.
  • * Car parking facilities have been expanded to allow for the growth in passenger traffic.

And during all these works, special measures were taken to prevent harm to protected plant and animal species that inhabit the adjoining ecologically sensitive areas.

New arrivals building

Work will start soon on a new arrivals building which is due to open in Summer 2011. The design of the new terminal takes advantage of the building's orientation to make maximum use of solar gain, solar shading, daylight and natural ventilation. These measures will reduce the need for mechanical and electrical installations which, in turn, will reduce the building's energy requirements.

This innovative building has been designed to produce 70% less CO2 emissions than a traditional building, and it's believed to be the first airport building of its type in the UK.

Commenting on the airport's £45 million redevelopment programme, Managing Director Rob Goldsmith said: "It has been an amazing experience to have been involved in the transformation of Bournemouth Airport. We are very proud of our new facilities and hope to become one of the best regional airports in the UK."
