About Bournemouth Airport Continued

The retail and catering facilities have tripled in size to offer passengers the best possible airport experience – flying out or coming back home. While the redevelopment work has been going on, interim measures have been put in place to minimise disruption and keep operations running as smoothly as possible. A temporary departure lounge has been installed which incorporates a bar, coffee shop, restaurant, shops and four departure gates.“People have generally been very positive about the arrangements,” says Managing Director, Rob Goldsmith. “Everyone has worked incredibly hard as the work has progressed. It's been a fantastic team effort and I am sure our passengers have appreciated it. We are all very excited.

The redevelopment is well into its final stages and the new look airport will be something Bournemouth can be extremely proud of.” While visitors have been able to see the redevelopment rising up around them, some of the investment has been less obvious. The navigation and lighting systems have been upgraded enabling aircraft to operate in adverse weather conditions and putting Bournemouth on a par with major UK airports. Meanwhile, the runway has been completely resurfaced – a project that saw a team of 100 workers and 50 machines working overnight for two months. More obvious has been the massive expansion of the apron, with the enlarged area able to accommodate eleven aircraft with six contact stands. This means the airport can handle up to 30 movements a day.A covered walkway is also planned to ensure passengers will not have to walk more than a few metres in the open to get to their flight.

Bournemouth has grown in popularity over the years because it is convenient, on the doorstep and because it has retained a personal touch and an emphasis on customer care. There's none of the commotion and chaos, long distance travel, traffic jams and two mile hike to your plane that you normally associate with a major city airport.“It's wonderful to see the airport of the future taking shape,” says Rob Goldsmith. “The recession is going to have an effect on passenger numbers this year but it's a great sign of confidence that our owners are looking to the future and are fully committed to developing Bournemouth Airport.

“The new terminal will provide our passengers with a modern, attractive building which will allow us to grow to handle up to three million passengers a year in the future.” Over the past few years Bournemouth Airport has been one of the UK's fastest growing airports. In 2001 the airport handled 265,000 passengers. By 2004 this figure had increased to 499,236 and the following year (2005) passenger numbers doubled to 836,856. It now handles over 1 million passengers a year – hence the need for a new and improved airport terminal.
